It’s Christmas once again – my favorite season of the year! :)

I love Christmas because of the joy of gift-giving and bonding with family while commemorating the birth of Jesus. However, to some, Christmas is sadly perceived merely as feasting on food and having material goods such as new clothes, shoes, and accessories – that some tend to commit not-so-good deeds especially those who are less privileged.

Just few weeks ago, my sister’s cellphone was stolen, right inside our bedroom. Sadly, that phone, a Sony Cybershot K800 was paid in full just recently. ‘Til now, it hasn’t been recovered. Certainly, the thief is just around our neighbor. Incidentally, days after, my officemate became a victim of “lag-lag barya” gang inside a jeepney going to Baclaran. A guy beside him “accidentally” dropped a 5-peso coin. Unaware of their modus operandi, my officemate picked up the coin and gave it back to him. The guy had his stop to Shopwise, Sucat and that was when my officemate noticed his phone on his pocket was missing. Another guy beside him told him that the guy who went down to Shopwise got the cellphone. So, he chased the guy but found nothing, they even brawled each other. The cellphone was not recovered even when the police came.

These incidents are rampant on our society, and it increases especially during holiday season. The true spirit of Christmas is by giving self-less love, putting a smile on a child’s face, and thanking God for Jesus’ birthday. Each year I pray that more people will realize the true meaning of Christmas. This Yuletide season, just be vigilant, be aware, be watchful. Have a joyous Christmas and a happy New Year!
